The University of Benin calls its screening the PUTME/PUDE. Its official news pages were not reachable when we checked, so the 2026/2027 specifics below are labelled "reported" where they come from press coverage of UNIBEN's announcement. Treat the portal as the source of truth.

What the screening is

As reported for 2026/2027, UNIBEN ran a computer-based test (CBT) at designated centres on its Ugbowo campus. Candidates were told to arrive at least an hour early. Reported rules included bringing the acknowledgement slip and screening invitation slip, with no phones or calculators allowed. The report did not list test subjects or the number of questions, so we do not either.

Who was eligible in 2026

As reported for the 2026/2027 announcement:

  • UNIBEN as first choice, with a UTME score of 200 and above.
  • A valid email address.
  • At least five credits in relevant subjects including English and, where required, Mathematics, obtained in no more than two sittings.
  • Direct Entry candidates (PUDE) also registered separately.

How to apply

The report names unibenportal.com and its application section. The fee reported was ₦2,000 plus portal access charges, paid on Remita with an ATM-enabled card; check the portal for current amounts. Candidates were told to check from 17 July 2026 for their exam date, venue and time. Only use addresses that UNIBEN itself publishes, because copycat sites exist.

What a CBT day tends to involve

UNIBEN's reported rules (arrive an hour early, bring your slips, no phones or calculators) describe a standard computer-based test day. Expect identity checks at the entrance, a seat at a terminal, a login using details on your slip, and a timer on screen. Do not assume the layout of last year's test; read your own invitation. If you have never used a mouse-driven test, practise before the day, because fumbling with the interface wastes time that you cannot recover.

Two small habits help. First, answer the questions you are sure about quickly, flag the rest and return to them. Second, keep an eye on the timer at fixed points, such as after one-third and two-thirds of the time, so that you finish the paper instead of leaving the last block untouched.

What is not published

We could not find an official UNIBEN statement of the aggregate formula, the subjects tested or the number of questions for 2026/2027. If you want to understand how aggregates work in general, read our aggregate guide, then ask UNIBEN's admissions office through its published contacts.

A practice plan for UNIBEN

A CBT screening rewards speed and calm, so practise on a screen.

  1. Week 1: baseline. Take a 30-question timed set in English Language and note your time per question.
  2. Weeks 2 to 4: subject drill. Alternate English practice, Mathematics practice and your course subjects. Do not use a calculator, since UNIBEN's reported rules ban them.
  3. Weeks 5 to 6: exam rehearsal. Sit full timed blocks without leaving your seat or checking your phone. Use our CBT exam tips for navigation, flagging and review.
  4. Week before: Print your slips, plan the trip to Ugbowo and sleep properly.

Original example (ours, not from UNIBEN): Without a calculator, find 15% of ₦8,400. 10% is ₦840 and 5% is ₦420, so 15% is ₦1,260.

For method, read how to prepare for post-UTME and compare UNIPORT, another south-south school. Nobody can guarantee a score or know which items will appear.

Checklist before you pay anything

  • Use only the portal address that UNIBEN itself publishes; copycat sites exist.
  • Arrive at least an hour early on test day, as the reported notice advised.
  • Leave your phone and calculator at home or in the place the invitation slip allows.
  • Print both slips the report mentions: the acknowledgement and the invitation.

A six-week schedule

WeekFocusTarget
1Diagnostic: a 30-question timed set in English Language and MathematicsNote your time per question and your score
2Fix the weakest topics from the diagnosticOne topic a day, 20 questions each
3Course subjectsTwo timed sets per subject
4Mixed blocks40 questions in about 40 minutes
5Full rehearsal under test rulesNo phone, no calculator unless the notice allows it
6Light review and logisticsSlip, ID, route, sleep

The reported rules ban calculators, so do your weekly arithmetic by hand. Adjust the weeks if your window is shorter, and cut the number of subjects rather than the number of timed sets.

Two more practice questions

Both are original, written for this guide, and not taken from any UNIBEN paper.

  1. Evaluate 2⁵ ÷ 2² × 3. Working: 2⁵ ÷ 2² = 2³ = 8, and 8 × 3 = 24.
  2. Which is a vector quantity: mass, speed, velocity or time? Working: Velocity, because it has both size and direction.

After each set, write down why you missed a question: a content gap, a careless slip or a time problem. Each needs a different fix.
