The National Examinations Council (NECO) announced the 2026 SSCE Internal results on Thursday, 24 September 2026, at its headquarters in Minna, Niger State. This page puts the main figures together. All of them come from press reports of the announcement (the News Agency of Nigeria and Legit.ng), because we could not open a NECO statement with the full text. That is why we label them "reported".
The headline numbers
| Item | 2026 (reported) |
|---|---|
| Candidates registered | 1,378,048 |
| Candidates who sat | 1,371,992 |
| Five credits including English Language and Mathematics | 804,948 (58.67%) |
| Five credits irrespective of English and Mathematics | 1,162,118 (84.70%) |
| Malpractice cases | 1,406 (3,878 in 2025) |
The first benchmark, five credits including English and Mathematics, is the one most universities and many employers look for. The second counts five credits in any subjects.
Our arithmetic from the reported figures: 6,056 candidates registered but did not sit, so about 99.6% of those registered sat the exam. We also calculate that the 58.67% benchmark rate matches 804,948 divided by 1,371,992, so the percentages are shares of those who sat. These are our calculations, not NECO's.
Gender breakdown
| Male | Female | |
|---|---|---|
| Registered | 682,352 | 695,696 |
| Sat | 678,903 | 693,089 |
NECO's announcement, as reported, did not give credit rates by gender, so we do not print them. Female candidates were slightly more numerous in both the registered and the sitting totals.
Malpractice
The reported number of malpractice cases fell from 3,878 in 2025 to 1,406 in 2026. One report called this a 64.74% drop. By our arithmetic, the fall works out at about 63.7%, so we use the lower figure. Either way, malpractice fell sharply, which is good news for candidates who sat honestly, because it protects the value of the certificate.
When it happened
The 2026 SSCE Internal was reported to run from 15 June to 23 July 2026. The 23 July end date fits a report that the results were announced 63 days after the examination ended. The results announcement, on 24 September, therefore came about two months after the last paper.
How NECO compares with WAEC in 2026
| WAEC WASSCE (school) | NECO SSCE Internal | |
|---|---|---|
| Sat | 1,950,726 | 1,371,992 |
| Five credits including English and Mathematics | 61.54% | 58.67% |
| Five credits regardless of English and Mathematics | 86.50% | 84.70% |
The two exams have different cohorts and different candidates, so a gap of a few points should not be read as one body being "harder" than the other. The comparison is useful for one reason: in both, the English and Mathematics requirement costs about 25 percentage points. That is a pattern worth planning around. What it means for 2027
The proposed 2027 NECO SSCE window is 1 April to 14 May 2027, with results targeted for August 2027, which would be earlier than this year's 24 September announcement. These are proposals only. See the NECO 2027 timetable for the full picture and what NECO has not yet released.
What to take from these numbers
- English and Mathematics are the gate. About a quarter of candidates reach five credits but miss one of the two. Give those subjects extra, regular practice.
- Most candidates do get through. An 84.70% five-credit rate shows the exam is passable with solid preparation.
- Honesty pays. Malpractice cases dropped, and there is no shortcut that survives scrutiny.
Counting the gap
The distance between the two benchmarks shows where the pressure is. Using the reported figures, 1,162,118 candidates earned five credits in some combination of subjects, and 804,948 did so including English Language and Mathematics. The difference is 357,170 candidates (our arithmetic), roughly one in four of those who sat, who reached five credits but missed the English-and-Mathematics requirement.
An illustration, not a prediction: if a class of 100 candidates matched the national rates, about 59 would hit the English-and-Mathematics benchmark and about 85 would earn five credits in any subjects. Your class may differ, but this is a fair way to see why those two subjects deserve extra hours.
How to read the figures responsibly
- Check the base. Percentages here are shares of those who sat, not of those registered.
- Compare like with like. NECO's cohort and WAEC's cohort are different groups of students, with different schools and different exam periods.
- Beware one-year conclusions. The malpractice fall from 3,878 to 1,406 is a reported change between two years. It suggests a trend, but one comparison is not proof.
- Remember who reported it. We relied on news agencies and press reports of the announcement. If you need an exact figure for a formal purpose, ask NECO.
Checking your own result
Results are checked on NECO's official channels. Our guide to how to check your NECO result walks through it, and the NECO grading system explains what the grades mean. For students planning ahead, remember that a credit is the target for most admission requirements, so know the grade bands before you worry about the numbers.
