JAMB Subject Combination for Education (by Teaching Subject)
Education combinations depend on your teaching subject. See reported UTME lists for Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths, English, Economics and Government.

There is no single combination for "Education". The degree is built around a teaching subject, and your UTME subjects follow that subject: Education Mathematics asks for different subjects from Education English. The lists below come from 2026 guides to JAMB's combinations. Where two guides disagree, we say so. Your JAMB brochure and target university are the final word.
The combination at a glance
BusinessDay (23 February 2026) lists these combinations. Use of English is the first subject in every one.
| Education programme | Reported UTME subjects (BusinessDay) |
|---|---|
| Education and Biology | English, Biology, Chemistry; add Physics or Mathematics |
| Education and Chemistry | English, Chemistry, Biology; add Physics or Mathematics |
| Education and Physics | English, Physics, and Mathematics or Chemistry; add Biology or Agricultural Science |
| Education and Mathematics | English, Mathematics; choose two from Physics, Chemistry or Economics |
| Education and English Language | English, Literature in English; choose two from Government, History or CRS/IRS |
| Education and Economics | English, Economics; choose two from Mathematics, Government, History or Geography |
| Education and Government | English, Government; choose two from Economics, History or Literature in English |
| Education and Political Science | Same as Education and Government |
The UTME is a computer-based test. You register for four subjects, Use of English plus three tied to your course, and it is scored out of 400.
What the sources say, and where they disagree
School Registry NG (updated February 2026, and saying it follows the JAMB brochure) lists a few of these in stricter form:
| Programme | BusinessDay | School Registry NG |
|---|---|---|
| Education/Biology | English, Biology, Chemistry, plus Physics or Mathematics | English, Biology, Chemistry, Physics |
| Education/Mathematics | English, Mathematics, plus two from Physics, Chemistry or Economics | English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry |
| Education/English | English, Literature in English, plus two from Government, History or CRS/IRS | English, Literature, Government/History, CRS/IRS |
The English entries are consistent. For Biology and Mathematics, BusinessDay allows more choice than School Registry does. We could not open the JAMB brochure, so we cannot say which is current. If you are choosing Education Biology or Education Mathematics, use the stricter set only if your target school confirms it, and otherwise follow the brochure.
Programmes you do not see above, such as Education and History or Special Education, are not covered by the guides we could read. Check the brochure for those.
Why these subjects
Education degrees prepare you to teach a subject, so the admissions board wants evidence you can handle that subject at school level first. That is why the Mathematics programme leans on Mathematics and the sciences, while the English programme leans on Literature in English and Arts subjects. Use of English is on every list because teaching is done in English.
Pick your teaching subject first, then build the four subjects from its row in the table. If you choose the subjects first and the programme second, you can end up eligible for neither.
Avoid combination mistakes
A wrong subject combination is one of the most avoidable reasons for trouble. A few habits help:
- Write the four subjects down before you go to the centre. Do not rely on an agent's memory.
- Check them against the brochure on jamb.gov.ng and against the admission requirements of each university you choose.
- Do not drop a required subject because you find it hard. If the university requires it, a different choice can make you ineligible.
- Recheck your slip. Confirm all four subjects are correct before you leave the registration centre.
Nairametrics reported in February 2026 that candidates who had picked the wrong subjects, or wanted to change them, could do so at an accredited centre during that year's registration period. Do not assume the same window will exist for 2027. Watch jamb.gov.ng and read our guide to changing your course.
Our general guide to JAMB subject combinations shows the logic behind combinations for other courses.
O'level requirements are separate
The UTME subjects are only one half of the picture. Your WAEC, NECO or NABTEB result matters too. Universities set their own O'level requirements for each Education programme, and they differ by teaching subject and school. Read the requirements on your target school's website. We do not print a universal O'level rule here because we could not source one.
What is the score you need?
That is a different question. JAMB sets a national minimum for universities (reported as 150 for 2026/2027), but schools can set higher requirements for individual courses. Read our guide to the JAMB cut-off mark for Education for what is and is not published, and what JAMB score you need to get admission for the wider picture.
How to prepare the four subjects
From 29 October 2026 to the proposed UTME window of 15 to 25 March 2027 there are 137 days. That window is a proposal, not a final date. See the JAMB 2027 UTME date and timetable for the latest. A plan that works for many candidates:
- Practise your teaching subject hardest. It carries the most weight in your future degree.
- Spread your hours across all four subjects. Do not neglect Use of English.
- Keep an error log and revisit it weekly.
- Do timed, four-subject practice in the final weeks.
Always work from the official JAMB syllabus for each subject, which you can find on jamb.gov.ng.
If you change your mind
If you later prefer a different Education programme or another course, you may be able to apply for a change of course, depending on JAMB's rules at the time. Read the guide on changing your course first. Moving between two Education programmes can fail if the subjects you wrote do not match the new teaching subject. If you are torn between teaching English and studying it as an Arts degree, see the English combination.
Topic areas to cover in each subject
Use the official JAMB syllabus as your checklist. As a rough guide, broad areas you are likely to meet are:
| Subject | Broad areas to expect (confirm in the syllabus) |
|---|---|
| Use of English | Comprehension, vocabulary and structure, summary, oral forms |
| Your teaching subject (for example Mathematics) | Follow the official JAMB syllabus for that subject, topic by topic |
| Supporting subjects | Follow the syllabus for each; start with your weakest |
Because the subjects vary by programme, we do not list topics for every subject here. Open the JAMB syllabus for each of your four.
A sample weekly split
This is advice, not an official plan. Adjust it to your timetable and strengths.
| Day | Focus |
|---|---|
| Monday | Your teaching subject topic work |
| Tuesday | Your second subject topic work |
| Wednesday | Your third subject topic work |
| Thursday | Use of English and review |
| Friday | Mixed questions across all four, timed |
| Saturday | A longer paper or an error-log review |
| Sunday | Rest |
Confirm it on IBASS
Every list on this page is press-reported. JAMB's own brochure is on its IBASS portal at ibass.jamb.gov.ng/brochure, and we could only open its landing page, not the course entries. Look up your course there, then check your target university's admission page, before you register.
ExamPadi has 46,182 practice questions across JAMB, WAEC, NECO and NABTEB, with a timed CBT mode. Free practice is available, with a Pro tier, on Android, iOS, web and Windows.

What is the JAMB subject combination for Education?
It depends on the teaching subject. For example, Education and Biology is reported as English, Biology and Chemistry plus Physics or Mathematics. See the table for others.
Is there one combination for all Education courses?
No. Each Education programme is tied to its teaching subject, so Education Mathematics and Education English have different lists.
Do the guides agree on Education combinations?
Mostly, but not completely. School Registry NG lists a stricter version for Education Biology and Education Mathematics than BusinessDay does. Confirm in the JAMB brochure.
Where do I confirm my combination?
In JAMB's brochure at jamb.gov.ng and on your target university's admission requirements page.
