JAMB Subject Combination for Banking and Finance
JAMB subject combination for Banking and Finance: Use of English, Mathematics, Economics and one more subject. Sources differ on the fourth; see how to check.
ExamPadi Editorial · Updated · 6 min read
Banking and Finance is a numbers-and-markets course, and its UTME set has a fixed core and an open fourth slot. The set listed for the 2026 UTME is:
Use of English, Mathematics and Economics, plus one more subject.
Myschoolnews' list of JAMB's 2026 combinations gives this, without naming the fourth subject. BusinessDay's 2026 article did not list the course in the part we could read. We could not open the JAMB brochure, so the fourth subject is the one thing to confirm on IBASS.
The combination at a glance
| Slot | Subject | Why it matters for the course |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Use of English | Compulsory for every candidate |
| 2 | Mathematics | Numbers, interest, ratios and statistics |
| 3 | Economics | Markets, money and institutions |
| 4 | One more subject | Not named in the press list we read; confirm in the brochure |
What the sources say
Myschoolnews names three subjects and leaves the fourth open. We also looked at a university source. The University of Nigeria, Nsukka's Banking and Finance admission page lists O'level credits in English Language, Mathematics and Economics, plus one of Commerce, Geography, Government or Accounting. That is an O'level requirement at one school, not the UTME rule, so do not treat it as the fourth UTME subject. Other aggregator sites give different fourth subjects depending on the faculty that houses the course, which is why we send you to the brochure.
Why the fourth subject varies
In some schools Banking and Finance sits in a management or administration faculty, in others in social sciences, and the entry notes can differ between them. Ask the department directly which fourth subject it expects, and read the brochure entry for that school. Our Business Administration page shows a similar pattern with a named list of options, and Accounting is a close relative.
O'level requirements
The one university source we could verify (UNN) lists five O'level credits, including English Language, Mathematics and Economics, plus one of Commerce, Geography, Government or Accounting, and a science subject credit among the general requirements. Other schools will differ. Read the page for your own target.
Avoid the usual mistakes
A wrong combination can cost you a whole year, so protect yourself:
- Write down your subjects before you go to the registration centre, and read them back to the officer.
- Do not swap subjects because an agent or a friend says it is fine. Only JAMB's brochure and the institution can tell you what is allowed.
- Check your slip and keep a copy of it.
- Test every choice. If your second choice is a different course, check that the same four subjects satisfy it as well. Our JAMB subject combination guide explains how to compare choices, and changing your course explains what can be corrected later.
Confirm it before you pay
Before you register, run this short check:
- Open JAMB's brochure on jamb.gov.ng and find the entry for the exact course name your school uses.
- Open the admission page of each university on your list, and note any extra requirement, such as a particular O'level grade or a post-UTME screening.
- If a press list, a blog or an agent disagrees with either, follow the brochure and the school, and ask the school in writing if the difference matters.
- Keep a screenshot or copy of the entry you relied on.
This takes less than an hour and removes one of the most common avoidable errors in registration. When we call a list a press summary, we mean it: we are reporting what the outlet printed, not what we read in the brochure.
How to prepare
- Mathematics and Economics are in every version, so start there.
- Hold your fourth-subject decision until the brochure confirms what is allowed, then choose the option in which you score highest.
- Use of English needs steady reading and practice.
- Timed papers in the final weeks give you pace.
Do not rely on an agent to choose your subject for you.
What about the score?
The combination only gets you through the first door. For the score, read our cut-off mark for Banking and Finance page, which separates JAMB's national minimum from each school's own figure, and the general guide to the JAMB score needed for admission. The UTME is computer-based, with four subjects, two hours and a score out of 400. The proposed 2027 dates are provisional, so follow the JAMB 2027 UTME date and timetable page.
