JAMB Subject Combination for Agriculture (2027)
Reported UTME subjects for Agriculture: Use of English, Chemistry, Biology or Agricultural Science, and Physics or Mathematics. Sub-course options and caveats.
ExamPadi Editorial · Updated · 7 min read
Agriculture is a family of courses, and the exact UTME subjects depend on which one you choose. For general Agriculture, a Myschoolnews guide to JAMB's 2026 list reports Use of English, Chemistry, Biology or Agricultural Science, and Physics or Mathematics. The BusinessDay guide we read has no general Agriculture entry, so this list rests on one press source. Confirm it on the JAMB brochure.
The combination at a glance
| Slot | Subject | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Use of English | Compulsory for every UTME candidate |
| 2 | Chemistry | Listed as required |
| 3 | Biology or Agricultural Science | One of the two |
| 4 | Physics or Mathematics | One of the two |
The UTME is a computer-based test. You register for four subjects, Use of English plus three tied to your course, and it is scored out of 400.
What the sources say, and where they disagree
Myschoolnews (13 October 2025, attributing its list to JAMB) also gives sub-course lists:
| Sub-course | Reported UTME subjects |
|---|---|
| Agricultural Economics | English, Chemistry, Biology or Agricultural Science, and Mathematics |
| Agricultural Extension | English, Chemistry, Biology or Agricultural Science, plus Mathematics or Physics |
| Agronomy | English, Chemistry, Biology or Agriculture, and Physics or Mathematics |
| Animal Production and Science | English, Chemistry, Biology or Agricultural Science, and Physics or Mathematics |
| Crop Production and Science | English, Chemistry, Biology or Agriculture, and Mathematics or Physics |
| Soil Science | English, Chemistry, Biology or Agricultural Science, plus Mathematics or Physics |
| Forestry | English, Chemistry, Biology or Agriculture, and Physics or Mathematics |
| Fisheries | English, Chemistry, Biology or Agricultural Science, and any other Science subject |
| Food Science and Technology | English, Chemistry, Mathematics or Physics, and Agricultural Science |
| Agricultural Engineering | English, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry |
Where this is thin. We found one press source for these lists, and it sometimes writes "Agriculture" where it means Agricultural Science. We did not find a second source to compare, and the BusinessDay guide has no entry for general Agriculture. Treat the table as a starting point and match it to the exact course name in the brochure.
Why these subjects
Agriculture draws on biology, chemistry and either physics or mathematics. Chemistry shows up on nearly every line because soil, fertiliser, food processing and animal nutrition all rest on it. The Biology-or-Agricultural-Science choice rewards candidates who studied Agricultural Science in school, while Physics-or-Mathematics lets you pick whichever you are stronger in.
Food Science and Technology reverses the pattern: it lists Agricultural Science as required and gives you a choice between Mathematics and Physics. Agricultural Engineering behaves like an engineering course, with Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. So read the line for your exact course, not just the heading.
Avoid combination mistakes
A wrong subject combination is one of the most avoidable reasons for trouble. A few habits help:
- Write the four subjects down before you go to the centre. Do not rely on an agent's memory.
- Check them against the brochure on jamb.gov.ng and against the admission requirements of each university you choose.
- Do not drop a required subject because you find it hard. If the university requires it, a different choice can make you ineligible.
- Recheck your slip. Confirm all four subjects are correct before you leave the registration centre.
Nairametrics reported in February 2026 that candidates who had picked the wrong subjects, or wanted to change them, could do so at an accredited centre during that year's registration period. Do not assume the same window will exist for 2027. Watch jamb.gov.ng and read our guide to changing your course.
Our general guide to JAMB subject combinations shows the logic behind combinations for other courses.
O'level requirements are separate
Your WAEC, NECO or NABTEB result matters alongside the UTME. Universities set their own O'level requirements for each programme. For Agriculture expect sciences and English to feature, and Agricultural Science may be listed too, but the exact subjects and grades are the institution's decision, so read its admission requirements. We do not print a universal O'level rule here because we could not source one.
What is the score you need?
That is a different question. JAMB sets a national minimum for universities (reported as 150 for 2026/2027), but schools can set higher requirements for individual courses. Read our guide to the JAMB cut-off mark for Agriculture for what is and is not published, and what JAMB score you need to get admission for the wider picture.
How to prepare the four subjects
From 29 October 2026 to the proposed UTME window of 15 to 25 March 2027 there are 137 days. That window is a proposal, not a final date. See the JAMB 2027 UTME date and timetable for the latest. A plan that works for many candidates:
- Choose your option subjects early. Decide between Biology and Agricultural Science, and between Physics and Mathematics, using your past mock scores.
- Practise by topic first, then by full paper.
- Keep an error log and revisit it weekly.
- Do timed, four-subject practice in the final weeks.
Always work from the official JAMB syllabus for each subject, which you can find on jamb.gov.ng.
If you change your mind
If you later prefer a related course, you may be able to apply for a change of course, depending on JAMB's rules at the time. Read the guide on changing your course first. Agriculture to Veterinary Medicine is a common thought, but the lists differ, so check that your four subjects fit.
Topic areas to cover in each subject
Use the official JAMB syllabus as your checklist. As a rough guide, broad areas you are likely to meet are:
| Subject | Broad areas to expect (confirm in the syllabus) |
|---|---|
| Chemistry | Atomic structure, bonding, acids and bases, organic chemistry, rates and equilibrium |
| Biology or Agricultural Science | Cells, genetics, ecology; or crop and animal husbandry, soil and farm management |
| Physics or Mathematics | Mechanics, heat, electricity; or algebra, calculus, statistics |
| Use of English | Comprehension, vocabulary and structure, summary, oral forms |
A sample weekly split
This is advice, not an official plan. Adjust it to your timetable and strengths.
| Day | Focus |
|---|---|
| Monday | Chemistry topic work |
| Tuesday | Biology or Agricultural Science topic work |
| Wednesday | Physics or Mathematics topic work |
| Thursday | Use of English and review |
| Friday | Mixed questions across all four, timed |
| Saturday | A longer paper or an error-log review |
| Sunday | Rest |
Confirm it on IBASS
Every list on this page is press-reported. JAMB's own brochure is on its IBASS portal at ibass.jamb.gov.ng/brochure, and we could only open its landing page, not the course entries. Look up your course there, then check your target university's admission page, before you register.
ExamPadi has 46,182 practice questions across JAMB, WAEC, NECO and NABTEB, with a timed CBT mode. Free practice is available, with a Pro tier, on Android, iOS, web and Windows.
