JAMB Direct Entry (DE) Guide: Who Qualifies and How

A plain guide to JAMB Direct Entry: who qualifies, accepted qualifications, how DE differs from UTME, reported fees and dates, and common mistakes to avoid.

ExamPadi Editorial · Updated · 7 min read

Not everyone enters university through the UTME. If you already hold a recognised higher qualification, the Direct Entry (DE) route may place you straight into the second year of a degree. This guide explains who qualifies, what the qualifications are, how the process differs from UTME, and the mistakes that cost candidates their chance.

Details change by year and by school, so treat what follows as a guide and confirm everything on jamb.gov.ng and your target school's website. JAMB had not announced 2027 Direct Entry dates or fees when we checked on 29 October 2026.

What Direct Entry means

Direct Entry is an admission route for candidates who already have an appropriate qualification beyond the secondary school certificate. Instead of starting at 100 level, successful candidates are usually admitted into 200 level of a related degree programme. You register with JAMB under the DE category, and the institution then screens you.

Who qualifies

Reports of the 2026 requirements describe two layers.

1. O'level credits. Candidates generally need the credit passes the target course requires, commonly five credits including English Language, in no more than the number of sittings the school accepts.

2. A recognised higher qualification. Reported examples include:

QualificationNotes
A-level type certificates (IJMB, JUPEB, NABTEB A-level, Cambridge A-level)Acceptance varies by school
NCENigeria Certificate in Education
ND and HNDNational and Higher National Diplomas
University diplomas and degreesDepends on course and school

Acceptance is not uniform. The University of Ibadan's 2026/2027 notice, for example, lists WAEC, NECO, Cambridge Advanced Level, NCE, ND, HND and degrees as accepted, and does not list IJMB or JUPEB. Other universities have different lists, and a course within a university can have its own rule. So always read the school's page for your course.

If your A-level result is still pending at registration time, reports say you may need to upload an admission letter and registration template, but check the instructions that apply to your year.

The two routes still share the same JAMB profile basics. Reports for 2026 say a National Identification Number (NIN) is required for profile creation, and we explain that in the JAMB NIN requirement.

Dates and fees (2026, for reference)

For 2026, Nairametrics reported:

  • A Direct Entry registration window from 2 March to 25 April 2026.
  • A DE e-PIN of N5,700, compared with higher figures for the UTME options.

Some sites listed different amounts for DE, so check the official fee when JAMB opens 2027 registration. Buy only through the official channels JAMB names. Do not pay an individual who says they can register you for less or faster.

Step by step

  1. Confirm your target course and school. Read their DE requirements and accepted qualifications.
  2. Gather documents. O'level results, your A-level, NCE or diploma certificate or admission letter, and identification.
  3. Make sure your NIN is ready and your details match your documents.
  4. Register with JAMB when the DE window opens, following the official steps.
  5. Apply to the school and complete its screening, which is usually separate from JAMB's registration.
  6. Watch CAPS for your admission status. See how to check JAMB admission status.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming every school accepts your qualification. Check before you pay.
  • Mismatched names across documents. Differences between certificates, NIN and JAMB profile slow everything down.
  • Choosing a course that does not match your background. DE usually places you in a related course.
  • Missing the school's screening. JAMB registration alone is not admission.
  • Trusting agents. Admission cannot be bought. Offers outside CAPS are not recognised.

Choosing between routes

If you are deciding between UTME and DE, consider time and cost. DE can save a year, but it needs a qualification you have to earn first. Our guides on JUPEB versus IJMB and university versus polytechnic can help you choose. If you want to move to a different course afterwards, see JAMB change of course. To understand how scores influence UTME admission, read what JAMB score you need.

Questions to ask the school

Before you register, send a short message or visit the admissions office and ask: Is my qualification accepted for this course? What O'level credits are required, and how many sittings are allowed? When is the screening, and what does it involve? Is there a minimum grade in my A-level, NCE or diploma? Write down the answers and the name of the person you spoke to. A confirmed answer from the school itself is worth more than any blog.

Prepare for screening

Even though DE candidates do not usually take the UTME, many schools run a screening test or interview. Revising your O'level subjects, practising aptitude-style questions and brushing up English helps. ExamPadi has 46,182 practice questions across JAMB, WAEC, NECO and NABTEB, with free daily practice and a Pro tier for full timed mocks. Use the JAMB practice hub to refresh your subjects. We cannot promise admission, but preparing well lets you present your best self.
