JAMB Christian Religious Studies: Topics to Focus On
JAMB CRK topics ranked for 2027: the Gospels, covenants and Genesis first, then the prophets, Acts, Pauline letters and Christian ethics, with practice tips.
ExamPadi Editorial · Updated · 6 min read
Christian Religious Studies seems familiar to many candidates, and that is exactly where the trouble starts. A story you have heard a hundred times in church is not the same as the passage, sequence and teaching an exam asks you to recall. The reliable route is to treat CRK as a text-based subject: learn who, what, when and what it teaches.
Here is an order of study for the 2027 cycle. JAMB does not release topic frequencies, so the tiers are our study-priority judgement from the shape of the syllabus, not statistics. The current objectives are on IBASS, and any change to the format will be announced on jamb.gov.ng.
The eight areas
| Area | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Themes from Genesis | Creation, the fall, the flood, the covenant with Abraham, the patriarchs |
| The Mosaic covenant | Exodus, the law, the Sinai covenant |
| The Davidic covenant | Kingship, David's reign, the promise to David |
| The Prophets | Selected prophets, their messages and times |
| Synoptic Gospels | The life, teaching and works of Jesus |
| Acts of the Apostles | The early church and its growth |
| Pauline letters | The teachings and instructions of Paul |
| Christian ethics in modern society | Moral and social issues in a Christian light |
Tier one: start here
The Synoptic Gospels. The life and ministry of Jesus carries a lot of content: birth, baptism, temptation, the sermon on the mount, parables, miracles, the passion and resurrection. Build a timeline, and for each parable write the setting, the story in one line, and the lesson in one line. A question may ask for the lesson or the audience, so those two details are worth having ready.
The covenants. Learn the covenants as a chain: Noah, Abraham, Moses, David. For each, write who it was made with, what God promised, what the human side was, and the sign. Options often swap details between covenants, so a four-row table lets you spot the swap.
Themes from Genesis. Creation, the fall, Cain and Abel, the flood, the call of Abraham, and the stories of Isaac, Jacob and Joseph. Learn the order of events and what each shows about God and human nature.
Tier two: build next
The Prophets. Learn each syllabus prophet as a card: period, audience, main message, notable event. Prophets are easy to mix up, so put the card in the same format every time so differences stand out.
Acts of the Apostles. Pentecost, the early community, the growth of the church, Peter, Stephen, the conversion of Paul, and the missionary journeys. A simple map and timeline will carry you far.
Pauline letters. Learn the occasion, audience and main teaching of each letter on the syllabus, such as teachings on faith, love, spiritual gifts and Christian conduct. Match each letter to its theme.
Tier three: later
- Detail on minor characters. Know the main figure in each story and what happened; the supporting cast can wait.
- Long genealogies and lists. Understand why they exist, but do not drill every name.
- Christian ethics in modern society. This is conceptual, but never ignore it. It draws on general Christian principles applied to modern issues such as honesty, family life, corruption and respect for life. If you have studied the other topics, you will already have the scriptural basis for most of the answers. Practise stating a principle and the scriptural reason in one or two sentences.
Tier three means "later", not "never".
How to practise
| Topic | Method | Session length |
|---|---|---|
| Gospels | Timeline plus a parable table (setting, story, lesson) | 30 minutes |
| Covenants | Four-row comparison table, rewritten from memory | 15 minutes |
| Genesis | Order-of-events list, then questions | 20 minutes |
| Prophets and Acts | One card per prophet; map for Acts | 20 minutes |
| Pauline letters | Letter, audience, theme table | 20 minutes |
Read the actual passages for each item rather than depending on summaries; the language used in questions follows the text. An original sample question: In the parable of the Good Samaritan, which two travellers passed by the wounded man before the Samaritan stopped? A priest and a Levite. Notice how the answer is a fact tied to a specific passage.
Recall techniques from how to memorise faster work well for CRK, especially spaced repetition on the cards. After each set of questions, keep an error log of what you missed and why, as described in how to use past questions.
For a full strategy, see how to pass JAMB CRK. If CRK is one of your four subjects, check the rules in the JAMB subject combination guide.
Mistakes to avoid
- Relying on Sunday school memory without reading the syllabus passages.
- Confusing prophets or covenants because the notes are not in a consistent format.
- Ignoring the ethics section until the last day.
- Putting hope in leaked answers. They are unreliable and can cost you your result.

What are the main topics in JAMB CRK?
Themes from Genesis, the Mosaic covenant, the Davidic covenant, the prophets, the Synoptic Gospels, Acts of the Apostles, the Pauline letters and Christian ethics in modern society. Confirm the exact syllabus on IBASS.
Do I need to memorise Bible verses?
You need to know the events, people, teachings and their meaning. Questions test content more than word-perfect recall. Use a Bible to read the passages the syllabus names.
Is CRK easy because I attend church?
Church knowledge helps, but exam questions follow the syllabus and ask for specific passages, characters and teachings. Study it as a school subject.
Does JAMB publish which CRK topics appear most?
No. The groupings here are editorial judgement based on the syllabus structure.
