BECE Social Studies Tips: How to Score High in 2027
How the Ghana BECE Social Studies paper is set across its three sections, what the sample questions cover, and how to write essay answers that earn marks.

Social Studies is a subject where a student who reads the news and thinks about their own community can outscore a student who only memorises notes. It is also one of the four core subjects in the BECE aggregate, so it matters for school placement. This guide uses WAEC Ghana's BECE regulations booklet (the version that applies from 2024) to explain the paper.
How the paper is built
| Paper | Format | Time | Marks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 | 40 objective questions | 45 minutes | 40 |
| Paper 2 | Essay, three sections, answer three questions | 1 hour | 60 |
Paper 2 has five questions in total:
- Section I, The Environment: one compulsory question.
- Section II, Law, Order and Nation Building: two questions, answer one.
- Section III, Social and Economic Development: two questions, answer one.
So in practice you write three answers in one hour: roughly 20 minutes each, including planning. Make sure you answer the compulsory question and one from each of the other two sections, and do not spend all your time on the first one.
What the sample questions show
The sample paper in WAEC's booklet is not a prediction, but it shows the style. The objective questions touch on socialisation, adolescent behaviour, democracy and the rule of law, causes of environmental pollution in Ghana, human settlement, a Ghanaian law on the fair distribution of property, the rights of citizens including a fair trial, and ways of building self-confidence and personal values.
The essay sample includes:
- a question on food security and how science can help solve it,
- agents versus agencies of socialisation, with examples,
- what a map is, and drawing a simple map of your school,
- ways you can contribute to the development of your community and what to consider in community decision-making,
- marriage as a social institution and why marriages break down.
Notice how many questions tie the topic to your own life and community. The examiner wants to see that you can apply a concept, not just repeat it.
How to revise Social Studies
Organise by the three sections. Make one page of notes for each of Environment, Law and Nation Building, and Social and Economic Development. Under each, list the key terms, a definition in your own words, and one local example.
Learn definitions precisely. For a question like "differentiate between agents and agencies of socialisation", a clear definition of each and one example is the safest way to earn the marks.
Use Ghanaian examples. Name real places, institutions and practices you know. For instance, if you are discussing pollution, describe something visible in your own town rather than something from a textbook in another country.
Keep up with current affairs. Listen to the news with a parent or teacher. Topics such as elections, environmental protection, and community development come alive when you see them in real life.
How to write a good essay answer
Social Studies essays do not need beautiful English; they need clear points. A simple pattern:
- Start with a one-line definition or direct answer.
- Give the number of points the question asks for. If it says "four ways", write four, each in its own short paragraph or numbered point.
- Explain each point in a sentence or two, then add an example.
- If the question has parts (a) and (b), label them clearly so the examiner sees each part answered.
Here is an original practice question in the style of Section III: Mention three ways in which a community can protect a local river from pollution and explain each. Try it yourself. A strong answer names three actions, such as controlling waste disposal, banning activities that dump harmful materials, and organising clean-up days, and then explains briefly why each helps.
For the map-related questions
The sample paper includes a map question. Practise drawing a simple map of your school or neighbourhood. Include a title, a key or legend, a rough indication of direction (north arrow) and a scale if the question asks for it. Neat labelling gains marks.
Paper 1 tactics
- Read every option before you choose. Some answers are partly right but not the best fit.
- Eliminate obviously wrong choices first.
- Link questions to real situations, like the sample scenario of a class treasure hunt in a community, and think what a sensible person would do.
A weekly plan
- Two evenings: new content for one section, with notes.
- One evening: ten objective questions on that section, then review mistakes.
- One evening: one essay question under timed conditions (20 minutes).
- Weekend: revise the week's definitions aloud to a friend or family member.

The last week before the paper
Stop collecting new notes two days before the exam. Re-read your three one-page summaries, say the key definitions aloud, and redo one timed essay from memory. Prepare your pens, pencils and drawing materials the night before. In the exam, tick off the three questions you have chosen so that you do not run over time on the first one.
