CSSPS School Placement Guide: How SHS Selection Works
How Ghana's CSSPS places BECE candidates in SHS: the eight school choices, category limits, what the 2026 numbers showed, and what to do if you are not placed.
ExamPadi Editorial · Updated · 8 min read
A strong BECE result is only half the story. The other half is how you choose your schools. The Computerised School Selection and Placement System, or CSSPS, takes your BECE results and your school choices and places you in a senior high school (SHS), senior high technical school or TVET institution. This guide explains how it worked in 2026, using press reports of the official guide and the placement results.
One caution before we start: the rules are reissued each year in a placement guide, and the 2027 guide had not been published when we checked. Use this as a map, then follow the current guide on the official CSSPS portal.
The basic sequence
- You write the BECE, and WAEC releases results.
- You select your schools and programmes on the CSSPS portal when the selection window opens.
- The system places qualified candidates automatically.
- Results are released and placed candidates print their placement slip.
- Candidates who qualified but were not placed use self-placement, and others can use help or resolution channels.
In 2026, the Graphic Online guide reported that the joint placement guide was released on 3 August 2026, and the Ghana News Agency reported that placement results came out at 10 pm on 4 September 2026.
How school selection worked in 2026
According to Graphic Online's guide:
- You choose eight schools, ranked in order of preference.
- You may choose no more than two Category A schools and up to three Category B schools. The remaining three come from Category C.
- You cannot choose the same school more than once.
- For each choice you indicate a programme you want.
- Each choice is marked as boarding or day. The guide allowed up to five boarding and up to three day choices, and advised picking day schools within a reasonable travelling distance.
- Your first choice should be the school you most want.
Another outlet described a slightly different structure of choices, which is a reminder to read the official guide for the year you are in rather than rely on a summary, including this one.
What the categories mean in practice
Category A schools are the most oversubscribed. Numbers reported by the Ghana News Agency for 2026 show why:
| Category | First-choice selections | Declared vacancies |
|---|---|---|
| A | 313,283 | 76,417 |
| B | 176,614 | 250,366 |
| C | 123,577 | 468,652 |
Deputy Education Minister Dr Clement Apaak said the problem was a mismatch between where vacancies are and where candidates want to go, not a general shortage of places. Only 995 candidates chose participating private SHSs or SHTSs as their first choice.
The lesson for families is simple: it is fine to aim high with your first one or two choices, but use your remaining choices wisely, including schools where your aggregate gives you a realistic chance. A full set of eight ambitious choices can leave a qualified child unplaced.
What decides placement
Graphic Online reported that automatic placement considers four things: your aggregate, your programme of choice, your boarding or day preference and the vacancies available. Another report quoted officials as saying raw scores remain a primary factor. Our BECE grading system guide explains how the aggregate is calculated and why English and Mathematics carry extra risk.
Being qualified is a separate hurdle from being placed. The CSSPS coordinator said in September 2026 that candidates who fail English Language or Mathematics are disqualified from placement, while grade 9 does not automatically mean failure.
The 2026 results in numbers
The Ghana News Agency reported that:
- 527,932 candidates were placed, which is 87.3% of the 604,567 who qualified.
- 276,521 females and 251,411 males were placed.
- 76,635 qualified candidates were not automatically placed, mainly because of demand for Category A schools.
These are press-reported figures from the Ministry. They show that most qualified candidates were placed, but also that a large group were not.
If you are not placed, or not happy
The Ministry advised unplaced qualified candidates in 2026 to use the self-placement system and to consider schools and programmes with vacancies outside the most heavily subscribed institutions.
MyJoyOnline reported that officials at resolution centres said they could not help candidates who want Category A schools or some Category B schools that are already full, but that many Category C schools still had vacancies. So go with realistic expectations, take your documents, and ask about programmes as well as school names, because a good programme in a good Category B or C school can serve you well.
Keep these basics in mind:
- Use only the official CSSPS portal and official channels. Be careful with websites or individuals selling vouchers, "guaranteed" placements or insider access.
- Placement slips are printed after placement and presented when reporting.
- Never share your index number and personal details with strangers.
A smart-choice checklist for parents and candidates
- Write down your realistic aggregate range once results are out, and check how your target schools have performed.
- Choose programmes that match your strengths and plans, such as science, business, arts, visual arts, home economics or technical.
- Put your two Category A choices where you have a fair chance.
- Fill the rest with schools you would be happy to attend, including day schools near home.
- Double-check your choices before you confirm.
- Keep your slip safe and note the reporting date.
Timeline for the 2027 cycle
The reported BECE window for 2027 is early May, and in the 2026 cycle placement results came out on 4 September. Neither is guaranteed for 2027. Read our BECE 2027 timetable guide for what is known about the exam dates, and focus on your core subjects, starting with BECE Mathematics and BECE English.
Practice
ExamPadi does not have BECE or Ghana-specific practice questions yet, so we will not pretend otherwise. If you want to be told when BECE practice launches, register your interest on the download page. The rules and figures here are the 2026 cycle's; confirm the current placement guide on the official CSSPS portal and with the Ministry of Education before you choose schools.

How many schools can a BECE candidate choose in CSSPS?
For 2026, Graphic Online reported that candidates select eight schools in order of preference, with no more than two Category A and up to three Category B schools, and the remaining three from Category C. A school cannot be chosen twice. Rules can change, so read the current year's guide.
Is placement based on the aggregate alone?
No. Reports say automatic placement considers your aggregate, programme of choice, boarding or day preference and available vacancies.
What if I am qualified but not placed?
In 2026 the Ministry advised unplaced qualified candidates to use the self-placement system to pick schools and programmes that still have vacancies, and to consider schools outside the most heavily subscribed ones.
Can I pay someone to guarantee a Category A place?
No one can honestly guarantee that. Placement is run through the official CSSPS system. Be careful with anyone selling vouchers or promises, and use the official portal and the call centres.
Is this guide for 2027?
It explains the 2026 process, which is the most recent we can verify. The 2027 guide had not been published when we checked, and details may change.
