WAEC Commerce: Topics to Focus On
WAEC Commerce topics ranked for 2027: business forms, trade documents, banking and insurance first, then marketing, transport and the rest, plus practice tips.
ExamPadi Editorial · Updated · 6 min read
Commerce is the study of how goods and services move from the people who make them to the people who use them, and of everything that helps that movement along. That is why the syllabus looks long: it covers shops, banks, lorries, insurers, advertisers and more. The good news is that the topics lean on each other. Learn the foundations well and the later areas feel like extensions rather than new subjects.
The order below is our suggestion for WAEC Commerce in the 2027 cycle. WAEC's syllabus is on waecnigeria.org and the paper format should be checked there; we leave out question numbers, marks and timings on purpose. WAEC does not publish how often topics appear, so the groups are our own reading of how the subject connects and carry no official weight.
The map of the subject
| Area | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Foundations | Meaning and scope of commerce, trade, the chain of distribution |
| Business units | Sole trader, partnership, companies, co-operatives, public enterprises |
| Trade documents | Enquiry to receipt, including invoice, credit and debit notes |
| Financial services | Banking, insurance, the capital market, money |
| Services to trade | Transport, warehousing, communication, advertising |
| Marketing and consumers | The marketing mix, consumer protection, e-commerce |
| Business records | Discounts, profit, rate of stock turnover |
Group one: must master
Business units. Know each form by ownership, liability, how capital is raised, who controls it and how it ends. The pair that causes most confusion is the private company and the public company. Build a table and test yourself from memory a few days later.
The chain of distribution and trade documents. Follow one imaginary order from start to finish: the buyer asks for prices, the seller replies, an order is placed, goods are delivered, an invoice follows and payment is made. If you can tell that story aloud, you can name each document and its purpose. Original example: A seller discovers she charged a customer too little on an earlier invoice. Which document does she send to correct it? A debit note.
Banking and money. The functions of money, the services of commercial banks, types of account, cheques and the role of the central bank. These ideas feed into the capital market and into insurance, so they pay back twice.
Group two: services and markets
Insurance. The principles (utmost good faith, insurable interest, indemnity, subrogation, contribution) and the main classes of cover. Link each principle to a plain situation, such as a person insuring a house they do not own.
Marketing and consumer protection. The marketing mix, the choice of distribution channel and the role of consumer organisations. These suit short explanation answers.
Services to trade. Transport, warehousing, communication and advertising. For each, learn two advantages and two limitations, and be ready to say which is best for a given situation.
The capital market. Shares, debentures, the stock exchange and how companies raise money. Learn the difference between ownership and lending first.
Group three: shorter topics
- Public enterprises. Why governments run businesses and common problems such as poor management and political interference.
- E-commerce and modern trade. Learn the idea, benefits and risks in a few lines. Do not go deep.
- Business records. Keep to discount, profit and the rate of stock turnover. Original example: Cost of goods sold is ₦60,000 and average stock is ₦10,000. What is the rate of stock turnover? 60,000 ÷ 10,000 = 6 times.
Shaping a written Commerce answer
Because so much of the subject is descriptive, a clear structure helps more than sheer length. For a "state and explain" question, a safe layout is a heading for each point followed by one clear sentence of explanation. For a "distinguish between" question, give both items side by side and state the difference explicitly; do not just describe one and hope the other is implied. The habits in WAEC essay writing tips apply here too.
A practice plan
| Stage | Topics | How to practise |
|---|---|---|
| First fortnight | Business units, distribution, documents | Contrast tables; retell one order aloud |
| Second fortnight | Banking, money, insurance | Principles with examples; mixed sets |
| Third fortnight | Marketing, services to trade, capital market | Advantage and disadvantage lists; timed sets |
| Last stretch | Everything | Mixed practice with an error log |
Keep an error log noting the topic and why you missed each question (did not know, confused two terms, misread). Use the method in how to use past questions to turn the log into a revision list. For a wider strategy, read how to pass WAEC Commerce.
Mistakes to avoid
- Giving one-word answers where the question asks you to explain.
- Confusing invoice with receipt, or credit note with debit note.
- Listing points without any example from Nigerian trade.
- Searching for "expo". Malpractice can cancel a result, and no leaked sheet teaches you to write a definition in your own words.
Quick self-test
Which document does a seller issue when a buyer returns damaged goods? How would you set out five insurance principles with an example each? What are three differences between a private and a public company? Why might a producer sell straight to consumers instead of through a wholesaler? If you hesitate for more than a few seconds on any of these, go back to that group before starting the next.
Little and often
Commerce rewards short, regular sessions. Twenty minutes on a contrast table each day does more than a weekend of rereading. Rotate the groups so every topic returns within a few days, and close each session with five questions on what you just studied. Learn the command words too: state, list, distinguish, explain and discuss each ask for a different depth, and answering at the wrong depth wastes time.
Practise the topics

Which WAEC Commerce topic should I learn first?
Business organisations and the structure of trade. Most other topics, including banking, insurance and documents, refer back to them.
Is WAEC Commerce mostly theory?
Largely, yes. It rewards clear definitions, lists of advantages and disadvantages, and short explanations, with a small amount of arithmetic on discounts and profit. Check the current syllabus for the exact scope.
Do I need to be good at calculations to do well in Commerce?
No. The calculations are light, such as discounts, profit and simple rates. Spend most of your time on understanding and wording.
Does WAEC say how often each Commerce topic is tested?
No. The groups here are editorial judgement built from the syllabus structure and are not an official weighting.
