JAMB Islamic Religious Studies: Topics to Focus On

JAMB IRK topics to prioritise for 2027: the Qur'an, Hadith, Tawheed, pillars of Islam, Islamic history and ethics, ranked by priority with practice tips.

ExamPadi Editorial · Updated · 6 min read

Islamic Religious Studies rewards candidates who study the syllabus with the same discipline they would give a science. The content is precise: specific surahs, specific hadiths, specific events in a definite order. If you know the sequence and the lessons, you do well. If you rely on general knowledge, you lose marks on details.

What follows is a study order for the 2027 cycle, not a statistical ranking: JAMB does not release topic frequencies, so the tiers are our judgement of what the rest of the syllabus builds on. The objectives themselves are on IBASS, and format notices appear on jamb.gov.ng.

The nine areas

AreaWhat it covers
The Glorious Qur'anRevelation, compilation, selected surahs and their lessons
HadithMeaning, sources, selected hadiths and their lessons
TawheedThe oneness of Allah, its meaning and implications
Pillars of IslamShahadah, Salah, Zakah, Sawm, Hajj
Pillars of ImanArticles of faith
Islamic historyMakkah and Madinah periods of the Prophet's life
Caliphate eraThe rightly guided caliphs
Islamic ethicsConduct, family, society
Islam in NigeriaSpread, institutions and notable figures

Tier one: start here

The Qur'an and its compilation. Know the process of revelation, the writing and collection of the Qur'an, the work of Abu Bakr and Uthman in preserving it, and the structure of the text. Then learn each syllabus surah and verse for its subject, its setting and its lesson. A card for each, in the same format, makes revision quick.

Tawheed and the pillars of Islam. These are the foundation of the whole subject. For the five pillars, know the meaning, the conditions, the rules and the benefits. For Tawheed, learn its types and what contradicts it. These topics also feed ethics questions, so strength here pays off twice.

Islamic history: Makkah and Madinah. Build a timeline from the Prophet's birth to the establishment of the community in Madinah. Mark the key events: the first revelation, the early opposition, the Hijrah, the establishment of the first community, and the major battles and treaties on the syllabus. Dates and the order of events matter; the reasons and results matter more.

Tier two: build next

Hadith. Learn the meaning of Hadith, its relationship to the Qur'an, and the status and importance of the syllabus hadiths. As with surahs, a card for each hadith: the text's subject, the lesson, and one real-life application.

The pillars of Iman. Belief in Allah, the angels, the books, the prophets, the last day and destiny. Learn them as a set, with a short explanation of each.

The caliphate era. Create a card per caliph: how he came to office, main achievements, challenges and how his time ended. Comparing them keeps the facts distinct.

Islamic ethics. Honesty, trust, kindness, family rights and responsibilities, treatment of neighbours and orphans, and a range of social conduct. Because the answers follow from the Qur'an and Hadith, this topic is easier when you have studied those first.

Tier three: later

  • Islam in Nigeria. Study the main features of the spread of Islam in Nigeria, the notable leaders and institutions on the syllabus. It is a shorter block than most, which makes it a sensible one to finish late.
  • Extra detail on minor events. Know the main battles and treaties; leave the smaller incidents until you have mastered the main ones.
  • Technical Arabic terms beyond the syllabus. Use only the terms the syllabus names.

Tier three does not mean ignore. It means finish tiers one and two before spending long here.

How to practise

TopicMethodTime
Qur'an and HadithOne card per surah and per hadith: subject, setting, lesson20 minutes
Tawheed and pillarsWrite each pillar's rules and benefits from memory20 minutes
HistoryTimeline redrawn twice a week20 minutes
CaliphsComparison table15 minutes
Ethics and NigeriaShort question sets15 minutes

An original practice question: Which pillar of Islam involves abstaining from food, drink and certain actions from dawn to sunset during a specific month? Sawm, the fast of Ramadan. Notice that the question describes rather than names, so understand each pillar rather than only recognising its label.

The spaced repetition and active-recall methods in how to memorise faster suit this subject very well. After each question set, record what you missed and why; how to use past questions describes the method.

For an overall plan, read how to pass JAMB IRK. If IRK is one of your four subjects, check the subject combination guide for your course.

Mistakes to avoid

  1. Studying from a summary without reading the surahs and hadiths the syllabus names.
  2. Muddling the caliphs because notes are not in matching formats.
  3. Leaving history until the end and then trying to memorise a long timeline in a day.
  4. Searching for leaked answers instead of practising. They are unreliable and risk your result.

Practise the topics

Start with the Qur'an, Tawheed and the pillars, then move down the tiers. ExamPadi has free JAMB IRK practice with explanations and a timed CBT mode, which is useful because the UTME is taken on a computer. The JAMB hub covers your other subjects. No score can be promised, but structured, source-based study is the surest way to lift your marks.
