JAMB Commerce: Topics to Focus On

A priority map of JAMB Commerce topics for 2027: what to master first, what is commonly tested and what can wait, with practice advice for each group.

ExamPadi Editorial · Updated · 6 min read

Commerce is a wide subject with shallow edges. There are many topics, but few of them go deep, which means the winning approach is ranking: learn the connecting topics first, then the services that depend on them, then the specialist details.

This guide ranks the JAMB Commerce syllabus for the 2027 cycle. JAMB does not publish topic frequencies, so the groups are editorial judgement based on how the syllabus is structured and how the topics depend on one another. For the exact objectives and the paper format, read the syllabus on IBASS and the notices on jamb.gov.ng. We have not stated question numbers or time because those details can change.

Group one: must master

Business organisations. This is the backbone of Commerce. Know the features, advantages and disadvantages of the sole proprietorship, partnership, private company, public company and co-operative society, and the idea of limited versus unlimited liability. Almost every other topic refers back to these forms, so a weak grasp here costs you elsewhere.

How to practise: make a five-column table (ownership, liability, capital, continuity, who controls) and fill it from memory every few days until you can do it without looking.

Trade and distribution. Home trade versus foreign trade, retail versus wholesale, and the channels from producer to consumer. Learn the order of trade documents too. Original example: A shopkeeper receives goods and a note listing what was delivered, to compare against the order. Which document is this? The delivery note.

Banking. Types of bank, types of account, the services a commercial bank offers, and the job of the central bank. Learn cheques and drafts as a pair.

Group two: services that build on the foundation

Insurance. The principles (utmost good faith, insurable interest, indemnity, subrogation, contribution) are conceptual and easy to confuse. Learn each in one sentence with an everyday example. Know the difference between the insurer, the insured, the premium and the policy.

Marketing. The marketing mix (product, price, place, promotion) and the role of advertising. These questions reward clear definitions and a sense of why a business would choose one channel or medium over another.

Money. Functions (medium of exchange, store of value, unit of account, standard for deferred payment), characteristics of good money, and forms of money. Short, definition-heavy and quick to score on.

Aids to trade. Transport options with advantages and disadvantages, plus warehousing, communication and advertising. It is a large area, but each item is simple.

Group three: shallower areas

These areas are still part of the syllabus, so do not skip them, but spend time here after the first two groups feel solid.

  • Stock exchange. Know what it is, the difference between shares and debentures, and the role of a stockbroker. Detailed market procedures can wait.
  • Public enterprises. Reasons governments run businesses, and typical problems. Learn four reasons and four problems and move on.
  • Accounts. Keep this to the basics: simple records and discount arithmetic. A frequent trap is applying a cash discount to the list price when it applies after the trade discount. Original example: Goods listed at ₦5,000 carry a 20 per cent trade discount. What is the net price before any cash discount? 20 per cent of ₦5,000 is ₦1,000, so the net price is ₦4,000.

Why this order works

Commerce questions often test whether you can tell similar things apart. If you learn the business forms first, you can answer questions in banking, insurance and the stock exchange that ask which type of organisation provides a service. If you learn trade documents first, aids to trade becomes easier because you see where transport and warehousing sit in the chain.

A four-week rhythm

WeekFocusPractice
1Business organisations, tradeContrast tables, 15 questions per session
2Banking, insurancePrinciples with examples, mixed questions
3Marketing, money, aids to trade, accountsTimed sets of 20
4Stock exchange, public enterprises, then everythingFull mixed practice and error review

Keep an error log: for every question you miss, write the topic and the reason (did not know, confused two terms, misread the question). Patterns appear within a week. The guide to using past questions explains how to work from that log, and how to memorise faster covers methods for the definition-heavy parts.

For the general study strategy, see how to pass JAMB Commerce. If Commerce is part of your four-subject combination, check the combination rules for your course before you commit to it.

Mistakes that cost marks

  1. Learning definitions without examples, then failing questions that describe a situation.
  2. Mixing up the insurance principles.
  3. Treating Commerce like Accounting and spending days on calculations beyond the simple discount and profit sums.
  4. Chasing "expo" answers rather than building understanding. They are unreliable and they put your result at risk.

Practise the topics

Choose the first group and start there. ExamPadi has free JAMB Commerce practice with explanations, a timed CBT mode, and 46,182 practice questions across JAMB, WAEC, NECO and NABTEB. No guide can promise a particular score, but a ranked plan stops you from spending three weeks on the stock exchange while business organisations stays shaky.
