How to Pass WAEC Mathematics in 2027
How to pass WAEC Mathematics in 2027: earn method marks in written questions, stay accurate in objective ones, and aim for the credit grade courses need.
ExamPadi Editorial · Updated · 8 min read
For many students, WAEC Mathematics is the subject that decides everything. A credit in Mathematics, along with English, is what most universities and many other programmes ask for, which is why a single paper can hold up an admission. The good news is that WAEC Mathematics is also one of the most trainable papers, because the syllabus is stable and the questions come in familiar shapes.
This guide is for the 2027 cycle. It explains how the two kinds of question differ, how to earn marks even when you are not sure, and how to plan from now until the exam.
What you are preparing for
Exam dates, registration steps and the syllabus are published by WAEC, so check waecnigeria.org for the official 2027 timetable and do not rely on dates passed around in group chats. What you can generally expect is a mix of objective-style questions that test breadth and speed and theory-style questions that test method and presentation. We do not give numbers of questions, marks or minutes here. Read the instructions at the top of a recent past paper and the official syllabus, instead of trusting anyone's memory of them.
| Question style | What it rewards | Your main risk |
|---|---|---|
| Objective | Accuracy, speed, recall of formulas | Careless slips and wrong options chosen quickly |
| Theory | Method, clear steps, correct units, neat diagrams | Skipping steps, stopping when stuck, poor presentation |
Because most programmes look for a credit grade, it helps to understand how grading works. Read the WAEC grading system so that you know what each grade means.
Theory questions: marks are for method
In theory questions, a wrong answer with good working can still earn method marks, and a bare answer may earn less than a worked one. Use that fact.
- Write the formula. Even before substituting, a correct formula can earn a mark.
- Show each step on a new line. Do not compress three steps into one.
- Include units. Missing units can cost a mark in mensuration and statistics.
- Do not erase a wrong attempt that you cannot replace. Cross it out neatly, and move on.
- Attempt every part. A later part may use a result from an earlier part, and you can often continue with your own value.
Here is an original example showing how to present the work.
Find the value of x if 2x² − 7x + 3 = 0.
- Factorise: 2x² − 6x − x + 3 = 0
- Group: 2x(x − 3) − 1(x − 3) = 0
- So (2x − 1)(x − 3) = 0
- Therefore x = 1/2 or x = 3.
Every line is a place for the examiner to give a mark. If you made an error in the second line, the examiner can still reward the first.
Objective questions: accuracy and speed
In objective questions, only the final choice counts, so the rules change. Work fast, but stay careful.
- Substitute the options when solving would take longer.
- Estimate to remove silly options.
- Check the units and the form of the answer (fraction, decimal, standard form, to a given number of significant figures).
- Skip and return if a question takes too long. A stuck question costs time you could spend on easier ones.

Topics that carry the load
The Mathematics topics that ExamPadi uses for practice are Algebra, Indices and Logarithms, Quadratic Equations, Sequences and Series, Trigonometry, Coordinate Geometry, Calculus, Statistics and Probability, Mensuration, and Number and Numeration. Check the official syllabus on waecnigeria.org to confirm what is included for your year. A practical order of study:
- Number and Numeration, Algebra: these support everything else.
- Indices, Logarithms, Quadratic Equations: frequent and formula-driven.
- Mensuration and Geometry: areas, volumes, angles, circle properties, constructions where required.
- Trigonometry and Coordinate Geometry: bearings, heights and distances, gradients, equations of lines.
- Statistics and Probability: tables, mean, median, mode, simple probability and graphs.
- Sequences, Series and Calculus: include them if the syllabus does for your level, and learn the rules.
Each topic should be revised in three layers: the facts or formulas, a worked example, and a set of timed questions.
An original statistics example for a theory question:
The marks of six students are 2, 5, 6, 9, 11 and 13. Find the mean, correct to 2 decimal places, and the median.
- Mean = (2 + 5 + 6 + 9 + 11 + 13) ÷ 6 = 46 ÷ 6 = 7.67 (2 d.p.).
- Median: with six values, take the average of the 3rd and 4th: (6 + 9) ÷ 2 = 7.5.
Both answers take a couple of lines, and both would gain method marks if the layout is clear. Notice that the instruction about decimal places is part of the answer.
Graphs, diagrams and drawing tools
Some questions ask for a graph or a construction. Bring the correct instruments to the exam and practise using them: a ruler, a pair of compasses, a protractor and a sharp pencil. Plot points carefully, label axes with units and scales, and join points smoothly where the graph is a curve. Show any construction lines instead of erasing them, since they are part of your method.
Practise reading a question for the exact instruction. "Calculate" means show the working. "Without using tables or a calculator" means a method that does not use them. "Correct to 3 significant figures" is an instruction that earns a mark if followed.
A realistic plan
| Weeks before exam | Focus |
|---|---|
| 12 to 9 | Fix foundations: fractions, decimals, percentages, algebra; 20 questions a day |
| 8 to 5 | Topic by topic with theory-style working; one mixed set a week |
| 4 to 2 | Full past papers under exam conditions; mistake log review |
| Last week | Light revision, formula sheet, sleep |

Mistakes that cost credit grades
- Leaving theory questions blank when part marks may be available.
- Losing track of negative signs in algebra.
- Using the wrong angle mode (degrees or radians) if you use a calculator at all. Check the current rules on what is allowed.
- Ignoring the required form of the answer.
- Spending too long on one question.
Practise like the exam
Mathematics is learned by doing. ExamPadi has free WAEC Mathematics practice with worked explanations and a timed CBT mode, and it works on Android, iOS, web and Windows. Start with the 2025 WAEC Mathematics past questions, then use WAEC Mathematics topics to focus on to decide what to revise next. For free past questions across subjects, visit the free WAEC past questions page.
Nobody can guarantee a grade, and we will not pretend to. What you control is the number of honest, timed, marked practice sets you complete before the paper. Tonight, solve three theory-style questions, writing every line of working, and compare your layout with the worked solution.

What question types are in WAEC Mathematics?
WAEC Mathematics includes both objective-style and theory-style questions. The number of papers, questions, sections and the time allowed are set by WAEC and can change, so read the current syllabus and the instructions on a recent past paper at waecnigeria.org.
What grade do I need in WAEC Mathematics?
Most universities and many programmes ask for at least a credit, which is grade C6 or better, in Mathematics and English. Always confirm the requirement for your course with the institution.
Do I get marks for working in theory questions?
Yes. Theory questions usually award marks for method as well as for the final answer, so write clear steps even if you are unsure of the result.
How do I improve quickly if I failed Mathematics before?
Fix the foundations first: arithmetic, fractions, algebra and geometry basics. Then work through past questions by topic and keep a mistake log.
