How to Pass WAEC Biology in 2027: Notes, Diagrams, Plan
Pass WAEC Biology in 2027: master diagrams, key terms, genetics problems, ecology and the practical, with a study plan built around how answers are marked.
ExamPadi Editorial · Updated · 7 min read
Biology is one of the most popular WAEC science subjects, and also one of the easiest places to lose marks without noticing. Students often know the content but write answers that are too vague, draw diagrams that are hard to read, or mix up similar terms. A good plan fixes each of those problems.
This guide is written for students preparing for the 2027 WAEC cycle.
Understand how marks are earned
WAEC Biology is not assessed by recognition alone: expect to recall, to write and to show practical skill. How the components are structured, how marks are shared and how long you get, including the form of the practical for your candidate type, is for WAEC to say, so read the current syllabus on waecnigeria.org and ask your school what applies to you.
In written answers, examiners usually reward four things:
| What earns marks | What loses marks |
|---|---|
| Correct key terms | Everyday words in place of scientific ones |
| One clear point per sentence | Long paragraphs that hide the answer |
| Labelled diagrams with the title | Unlabelled or messy drawings |
| Answering the exact command word (state, explain, compare, describe) | Describing when you were asked to explain |
Compare questions deserve a special warning. Use a two-column table or make both sides of every point explicit in sentences. Writing only about one organism or process is a common cause of lost marks.
Divide the syllabus into five blocks
The ExamPadi biology topic list includes cell biology, genetics, evolution, ecology, plant and animal nutrition, reproduction, circulation, respiration and excretion. A useful way to study them is in blocks.
- Cells and organisation. Cell structure, functions of organelles, diffusion, osmosis and active transport, cell division.
- Nutrition and transport. Photosynthesis, mineral nutrition, the digestive system, the circulatory system and transport in plants.
- Respiration, excretion and coordination. Aerobic and anaerobic respiration, the kidney and skin, the nervous system, hormones and sense organs.
- Reproduction, growth and genetics. Reproduction in plants, animals and humans, inheritance, variation and evolution.
- Ecology and the environment. Ecosystems, food chains and webs, population, conservation, pollution and relationships between organisms.
Spend more time on blocks where you score lowest in practice, not on those you already like.
Diagrams: a skill you can train
Biology diagrams are a mini exam of their own. Practise the ones that come up often: the cell, the digestive system, the heart, the kidney or nephron, the flower, a seed, the eye and the ear, and a food web.
A routine for each diagram:
- Draw it large, with a sharp HB pencil.
- Use straight label lines that do not cross, ending on the part, not beside it.
- Write a title that says what you drew, such as "Longitudinal section of a flower".
- Cover the labels and test yourself the next day.
Genetics: treat it as a procedure
Genetics scares many students because it looks like mathematics. In fact it follows a pattern, and the pattern works even when the question is not the usual tall-and-short plant. Here is an original example.
A man with blood group A (genotype IAIO, where IA, IB and IO are the three alleles) marries a woman with blood group B (genotype IBIO). Which blood groups can their children have?
- Parents: IAIO × IBIO
- Gametes: IA or IO from the father; IB or IO from the mother
- Punnett square gives: IAIB, IAIO, IBIO, IOIO
- The children can be group AB, A, B or O, each with a one-in-four chance
Blood groups are a good test of the vocabulary, because the alleles IA and IB are both dominant over IO but neither dominates the other (codominance). Practise ordinary monohybrid crosses until the layout is automatic, then learn the words: genotype, phenotype, homozygous, heterozygous, allele, dominant, recessive. Add sex determination, where the sex of a child depends on whether the sperm carries an X or a Y.
Ecology and Nigerian examples
Ecology questions become easier when you attach them to places you know. A food chain with grass, grasshopper, toad and snake, or a pond with algae and tilapia, is easier to remember than abstract definitions. Learn the difference between habitat, ecosystem and community, between producers, consumers and decomposers, and the effects of pollution and deforestation. Do not guess at local statistics; stick to the concepts the syllabus tests.
The practical
The Biology practical normally tests observation and recording. You may be asked to look at specimens, identify features, draw and label what you see, carry out simple food tests or observe the effect of a factor on a process. Practise these habits:
- Draw only what you see, not what you expect.
- Keep proportions accurate and use the same scale in related drawings.
- Record results in a table before writing conclusions.
- State the conclusion in a sentence tied to the observation.
Our WAEC biology practical tips cover the common specimens and tests.
A four-week plan
| Week | Block | Key task |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Cells and organisation | Label and redraw five diagrams from memory |
| 2 | Nutrition, transport, respiration | 40 mixed objective questions, correct each error |
| 3 | Excretion, coordination, reproduction | Write six short theory answers, then mark them against your notes |
| 4 | Genetics, evolution, ecology | Ten genetics problems, plus a mixed timed paper |
Use the weekend to recap, and use how to memorise faster to avoid cramming. See WAEC Biology topics to focus on for detail on each topic.
Mistakes to avoid
- Confusing similar terms such as diffusion and osmosis, or mitosis and meiosis.
- Writing "food" when the answer is "glucose" or "starch".
- Drawing the nephron or heart from a half-memory.
- Leaning on "expo" instead of practice. It puts your result at risk and builds none of the drawing or reasoning skills the paper rewards.
Practise under exam conditions
Use ExamPadi's free WAEC Biology questions to find your weak blocks, then use the timed CBT mode for speed. The app has 46,182 practice questions across JAMB, WAEC, NECO and NABTEB, runs on Android, iOS, web and Windows, and has a Pro tier if you want more. Keep your written answers on paper, as examiners will be marking handwriting, not a screen.

Is WAEC Biology mostly memorisation?
There is a lot to remember, but the marks go to students who can apply what they know: label a diagram, explain a process, work out a genetics cross, interpret a food web. Understanding makes memorising easier.
How important are drawings in Biology?
Very. Biology questions often ask for a labelled diagram or for observations from a specimen. Practise drawing with a sharp pencil, clear labels and label lines that do not cross.
What does the practical test?
It tests skills such as observing and drawing specimens, carrying out simple food tests and recording results. Confirm the format that applies to you in the current syllabus on waecnigeria.org.
How do I remember so many terms?
Group them by system or process, test yourself without looking, and spread revision over several days instead of one long night.
