How to Check WAEC Result on the Official Portal

Step-by-step: check your WAEC WASSCE result on the official portal with your exam number and PIN, understand withheld or awaiting results, and avoid fake sites.

Result day should be a moment of relief, not a scramble through half a dozen suspicious websites. This guide walks you through the official way to check a WAEC WASSCE result, what to do if something looks wrong, and how to avoid the traps set around result time. ExamPadi does not check results for you, so everything below points to WAEC itself.

What you need before you start

  • Your examination number, which reports describe as 10 digits (a centre number followed by your candidate number).
  • The exam year and exam type, for example WASSCE for School Candidates.
  • A result-checking PIN and serial number, usually from a scratch card.

If you are a school candidate, your school's exam officer can often tell you how PINs were arranged for your class. Private candidates normally obtain their own.

Step by step

  1. Open the official WAEC site, waecnigeria.org, and use the "Check my result" link. It leads to the result portal at waecdirect.org.
  2. Enter your examination number.
  3. Choose the exam year and exam type.
  4. Enter the card serial number and PIN.
  5. Submit, then view and save or print the result page.

Each website layout can change, so follow the prompts on the screen. Never enter your PIN anywhere that does not appear to be WAEC's own domain.

About PINs

  • Reports say one PIN works for up to five checks, but only for one candidate's examination number.
  • Old cards from earlier years have been reported as still usable, but confirm this on the portal before relying on it.
  • Price figures vary widely between websites, from a few hundred naira to over N5,000 in different reports. Check the price on WAEC's official site, and buy only from WAEC offices, authorised banks or the official online route. Counterfeit PINs are a known problem.
  • If you have lost your serial number and PIN, WAEC's site has a recovery route that uses your exam details. Follow only the official link.

School candidates and private candidates

School candidates normally get their results through the process their school and WAEC set up for that year, and they may check on the same portal. Private candidates, who register separately, check with their own PIN and details. If you are not sure which group you belong to, ask your exam officer or read the instructions printed on your registration slip.

What if my result says "awaiting" or "withheld"?

These words do not always mean the same thing, and the safest answer comes from WAEC itself:

  • Awaiting result often means processing or an issue with your entry is still open.
  • Withheld often means the result is held while a query is investigated, for example a suspected irregularity.

Reports on 2026 advise contacting your school's exam officer or the nearest WAEC state office. Do not pay anyone who says they can "release" a result. Releases follow WAEC's process, not a payment to an agent. WAEC has previously cancelled or withheld results over malpractice such as possessing mobile phones in the hall, so take rules seriously. We cover this in avoid exam malpractice.

Verification for schools and employers

Checking your own result is different from verifying it for someone else. WAEC runs a separate online results verification service, which institutions and employers use to confirm a certificate. You do not need your checker PIN for that, and an institution should use WAEC's verification page, which is linked from waecnigeria.org.

Spot the fakes

  • WAEC's official domains are waecnigeria.org and waecdirect.org. Look-alike names ending differently are suspicious.
  • Do not trust "result checker" messages on WhatsApp or Telegram, especially ones asking for money.
  • WAEC has had to disown fake letters and fake lists circulating online in 2026, so verify unusual announcements on its own site before sharing.
  • Never send your PIN or serial to anyone who contacts you first.

After the result

Once you have your grades, learn what they mean in our WAEC grading system guide and what to do next in what to do after WAEC. If your grades are not what you wanted, a resit plan starts with identifying weak topics, not with chasing shortcuts.

A result-day checklist

Before you open the portal, take two minutes to get ready:

  1. Write your examination number, exam year and exam type on a piece of paper.
  2. Keep your scratch card or PIN details in front of you and make sure the numbers are clear.
  3. Use a phone or computer with a steady connection and some battery left.
  4. Open the site from waecnigeria.org, not from a message.
  5. When the result appears, save or print it straight away.

Then plan your next step calmly. Whether the grades are what you hoped for or not, you will make better decisions after reading them slowly than after reacting to them. Share your result with a parent or teacher who can help you plan.

Practise for the next step

Whether you are rewriting a subject or moving on to the UTME, steady practice is what improves results. ExamPadi has 46,182 practice questions across JAMB, WAEC, NECO and NABTEB, with free daily practice and a Pro tier for full timed mocks. Open the WAEC hub and choose a subject, or read how to pass WAEC for a plan. We cannot promise any grade, but we can help you practise well.
