BECE Career Technology Tips: How to Score High in 2027

Career Technology replaced BDT in the BECE. See the paper structure, what the sample questions cover (home economics, drawing, tools) and how to prepare.

Career Technology is a hands-on subject, but the BECE still tests it on paper. The subject was introduced with Creative Art and Design after the older Basic Design and Technology (BDT) was split, as a May 2024 Citi Newsroom report explained, and the Ghana Education Service list quoted there classed it as mandatory. This guide uses WAEC Ghana's BECE regulations booklet (the version that applies from 2024) to show how it is examined and how to prepare.

The paper at a glance

Career Technology is a composite of two papers, taken together in one sitting of 2 hours 5 minutes.

PaperFormatTimeMarks
Paper 140 multiple-choice questions50 minutes40
Paper 2Part A and Part B1 hour 15 minutes60

Paper 2 has two parts:

  • Part A: three questions, answer two. Question 1 is a test of practical and is compulsory.
  • Part B: three questions, answer two. Question 4 is a test of practical and is compulsory.

Each answer is worth 15 marks, so four answers make 60. Each answer is about 18 minutes of work, so keep an eye on the clock.

What the sample questions cover

WAEC's sample paper is not a prediction, but it shows the breadth you should prepare for. It includes:

Home economics and food

  • Edge finishes in sewing, for example for a kitchen apron
  • Choosing a meal for a child with a nutrition deficiency such as kwashiorkor
  • Dry methods of cooking
  • Preparing a drink and a cake from a basic recipe
  • Personal hygiene, food hygiene and food safety measures

Garment making

  • Tools used in dressmaking, such as the French curve

Technical drawing and workshop

  • Perspective drawing and vanishing points
  • Orthographic projection: drawing the front elevation and plan in first angle projection
  • Tools such as a cold chisel, and the angle at which its cutting edge is ground
  • Woodwork joints, such as a T-halving joint, and showing the stages of making one
  • Forces acting on an object

Environment and health

  • Measures to prevent poor environmental conditions

You can see that the subject mixes cooking, sewing, drawing and workshop skills. Make sure you cover all of them in your revision, not only the area you like best.

How to prepare for the practical questions

The compulsory practical question is the one that frightens many candidates. Treat it as a "show what you can do on paper" question.

For a recipe or process question: list the ingredients or materials with quantities if given, then the steps in order, using action words: measure, mix, bake, cool. Mention hygiene and safety where it fits. Give the method as numbered steps rather than a paragraph.

For a drawing question: bring and use your instruments properly. Draw neatly with a sharp pencil. Label clearly, use the correct line types, and follow the instruction (for example "draw full size"). If the question tells you to draw in first angle projection, check that your front elevation and plan are placed correctly relative to each other.

For a workshop question: learn the name and purpose of each common hand tool, and the order of steps in making a simple joint: mark out, cut, check, finish. When asked to "illustrate the stages", draw a small sketch for each stage and add a caption.

Preparing for Paper 1

  • Make flashcards of tools, materials and terms with a sketch on one side and the name and use on the other.
  • Review food and nutrition: nutrients, their sources, deficiency diseases, and suitable meals.
  • Practise reading diagrams. Some objective questions show a figure and ask you to identify a tool, a process, or the type of force.
  • Do a timed set of 40 questions in 50 minutes once a week in the final month.

An original practice question

State two reasons why a worker in a school workshop should wear protective clothing.

A solid answer might give two points such as protection from flying chips and dust, and from cuts or burns, and each should be a short clear sentence. Examiners reward clear, specific safety reasons.

A simple plan

  1. Week 1: food, nutrition and hygiene.
  2. Week 2: sewing, garment making and fabrics.
  3. Week 3: drawing: perspective and orthographic projection.
  4. Week 4: workshop tools and joints, then a full timed paper.

Practise whatever you can with your hands in class. If your school has limited tools, draw them and describe them. For revision habits, read how to study effectively. The thinking behind practical problem-solving is shared with our BECE ICT tips, and the BECE grading system explains how a good Career Technology grade can feature in your aggregate.

Your exam-day kit

Because Paper 2 includes practical-style drawing, check your equipment the night before: sharp pencils (including a harder one for fine lines), a good eraser, a ruler, a set square and a pair of compasses if your teacher has told you to bring them. Bring a pen for writing answers and make sure your instruments are not damaged. Ask your teacher exactly what is allowed in the hall, and follow the exam rules strictly.

Practice

ExamPadi does not have BECE or Ghana-specific practice questions yet. Use the sample questions in WAEC's booklet, your teacher's tests and your own hands-on practice. To be told when BECE practice launches, register your interest on the download page. Confirm exam dates, paper formats and rules on the official WAEC Ghana site (waecgh.org) and with your school; the sources used here are dated 2024 to 2026 and can change.

Frequently asked questions

What happened to Basic Design and Technology (BDT)?

A May 2024 Citi Newsroom report said Career Technology and Creative Art and Design were new BECE subjects culled from the previous Basic Design and Technology.

How is BECE Career Technology examined?

Two papers taken at one sitting of 2 hours 5 minutes. Paper 1 is 40 multiple choice questions in 50 minutes for 40 marks. Paper 2 lasts 1 hour 15 minutes and carries 60 marks.

Are there practical questions in the written paper?

Yes. WAEC's regulations describe a compulsory test-of-practical question in each part of Paper 2, so you should practise drawing and describing practical procedures.

Does Career Technology count for placement?

The aggregate takes four core subjects plus your best two other subjects. A 2024 GES list reported by Citi Newsroom classed Career Technology among mandatory subjects, so it can count if it is one of your best two.
